Trailer Session, #104, 9-16-13

This session went phenomenally well. I left the other boys in the paddock to work with Atticus. I thought that that would be a distraction, but it may have been a comfort instead.

He loaded fairly readily and I was able to move through the criteria fairly quickly. I started with touching his hocks (10 trials) and then backed him off the trailer before loading again and changing the criteria. The next set of ten trials was hooking the butt bar, then backing off again on cue. The third set of ten was hooking the butt bar and closing the back door for a second, then opening it and dropping the butt bar. The fourth and last set was hooking the butt bar, latching the back door for a second, then opening everything up again. Twice I made the mistake of closing everything up and walking up front to treat and then walking back again to open things up. But he seemed okay with that.

When we finished with the trailer, we went off to play paddock games.

About Laurie Higgins

I play with clicker training - with my horses, dogs, and cats. I also attempt to grow vegetables with the hope of one day being able to feed my family from my garden. My daughter and I are learning ballroom dancing. Well, we were. But she left me for a paying horse job, so now my husband and I are learning ballroom dancing. I'm also now helping Peggy Hogan, of Clicker Training Horses (and The Best Whisper is a Click) to teach people how to train their own horses using "clicker training".
